Maria Sibylla Merian was an artist and entomologist who focused on studying plants and insects, of which she made detailed drawings. In her publications she omitted her first name Anna. Her observations and documentation of the metamorphosis from caterpillars to butterflies constitute an important but not widely recognized contribution to entomology. She was probably the first to depict insects in combination with the plants on which they lived.
